When to Keep Your Child at Home

February 27, 2003

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Over the last several weeks, the number of ill children at school has substantially increased. I feel at this time it would be helpful to review some guidelines regarding when to keep your child at home. Please keep this letter as a helpful reference.

  1. FEVER- Keep home with a temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
****CHILDREN MUST BE FEVER-FREE FOR 24 HOURS BEFORE RETURNING TO SCHOOL
  2. VOMITING- Keep home when child vomits 2 or more times within the past 24 hours.
  3. DIARRHEA- Keep home if 3 or more watery stools in a 24 hour period especially if the child acts or looks ill.
  4. SORE THROAT- Keep home if child has a fever or swollen glands in the neck.
  5. GREENISH NOSE DISCHARGE AND/OR CHRONIC COUGH- Keep home if child exhibits these symptoms.
  6. APPEARANCE/BEHAVIOR- Keep home if unusually tired, pale, lack of appetite, difficult to wake, confused or irritable.
  7. RASH- Keep home if child has a body rash, especially with fever or itching.
  8. EYES- Keep home if thick mucus or pus draining from the eye or pink eye.
  9. EAR INFECTIONS WITHOUT FEVER- Child may come to school but needs to get medical treatment and follow-up.

If your child has any of the above symptoms, please keep him/her at home or make appropriate child care arrangement. Bringing a child to school with any of these symptoms puts other children and staff at risk of getting sick. If parents keep their sick children at home, this will result in stronger, healthier and happier children.

Sincerely,

Beth Robbins, RN BSN
School Nurse
